Social Policy Ministry, Economy Ministry, State Statistics Service, NASU Approve Method For Assessment Of Poverty

The Ministry of Social Policy, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the Ministry of Finance, the State Statistics Service and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) have adopted a complex method for assessment of the level of poverty.

This comes from the joint statement issued by the aforesaid bodies, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

According to the report, the method was developed with the ultimate goal to eradicate poverty.

The method evaluates poverty level based on three groups of criteria.

In particular, in accordance with the European Union's classification, a household is in deprivation if the household has arrears under mortgage loan, rental fees, utilities or past-due loans for purchase of goods or services;

A household is in deprivation if they cannot afford to pay a one-week vacation away from the house;

Inability to pay for proper level of temperature in the house;

A household does not have sufficient funds to pay for consumption of food containing meat, chicken or fish (or their equivalent in the vegetarian nutrition) every second day;

Inability to pay ad-hoc expenses from their savings;

If a household is unable to afford a phone (including a mobile phone);

If a household is unable to afford a colored TV-set;

If a household is unable to afford a washing machine;

If a household is unable to afford a car.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on August 8, 2016, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a plan of measures for overcoming poverty for 2016-2017.

On March 2, 2016, the Cabinet approved a Strategy of Overcoming Poverty until 2020.
