Hungarian Ambassador Keskeny Expects Positive Resolution Of Situation Surrounding Education Law

Hungarian Ambassador to Ukraine Erno Keskeny expects positive resolution to the situation surrounding Ukraine's new education law.

Keskeny announced this at a press conference at the Hungarian embassy in Ukraine, which was dedicated to the announcement of the cultural events that will be held in the second half of 2017 with the support of the embassy, the Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"You can see in the mass media that we are currently not going through the easiest period in Hungarian-Ukrainian relations. I hope that we will survive this phase and that we will also be able to find a joint solution to those problematic issues that are the subject of disputes," the ambassador said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the new education law entered into force on September 28.

Hungary has said that it intends to block any initiatives involving integration of Ukraine into the European Union because of the language provisions of the new Ukrainian education law.

The Ukrainian Presidential Administration's deputy head Kostiantyn Yelyseev believes that Hungary's reaction to the new the new education law is linked to the upcoming parliamentary elections in Hungary, which are to be held in 2018.

Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman recently instructed Minister of Education and Science Lilia Hrynevych and Foreign Affairs Minister Pavlo Klimkin to hold consultations with ambassadors of European Union countries on the language provisions of the new law "On Education." After that, Ukraine and the heads of European Union diplomatic missions agreed on a plan for implementation of the language provisions of the new education law and on bilateral consultations.

Ukraine has said that it is ready to submit the Education Law's article on the language of teaching to the Council of Europe for expert assessment.

Ukraine intends to revise the language provisions of the new law on general secondary education and educational programs.

Russia believes that the language provisions of the new education law infringe on the rights of the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine.

Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova have expressed concern that the language provisions of the new law "On Education" violate the rights of ethnic minorities in Ukraine.
