Ukraine's Leaders Take Part In Celebrations On Occasion Of National Flag Day On Sofiyska Square In Kyiv

The ceremony of the national flag raising has been held on Sofiyska Square in Kyiv.

A correspondent of Ukrainian News Agency reports this from the scene.

Participating in the ceremony were President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman, Verkhovna Rada Chairperson Andriy Parubiy, cabinet members, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, a number of Ukrainian politicians and government officials, veterans and participants in the antiterrorist operation in the east of Ukraine.

Some 1,000 Ukrainians came to the square with flags.

President Poroshenko delivered a speech.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in 2004, then President Leonid Kuchma by his decree established the Day of National Flag of Ukraine that since then it is celebrated annually on August 23.

In 2009, then President Viktor Yuschenko amended the decree expanding the annual ceremony of the national flag raising on August 23 into the nationwide official celebration.
