Scotland Wants To Join NATO after independence

Scotland intends to apply to join the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) after gaining independence from the UK.

The corresponding statement was made by the first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, according to The Independent.

"The party I lead, the Scottish National Party, made a decision back in 2012 - at that time it was a reversal of a longstanding position - that if Scotland were to become independent, it should seek NATO membership," Sturgeon said.

She added that the events of the past 3 months have strengthened her confidence that this position is correct and necessary.

Recall that in 2014 the Scottish government held a referendum on independence and secession from the United Kingdom. However, in the referendum, 55% of voters voted against.

After the UK left the European Union, the Scottish authorities decided to hold a second referendum on the independence of the region.

Earlier we reported that on Monday, May 16, Finnish President and Prime Minister Sauli Niinisto announced that his country was applying for NATO membership.

On the same day, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced that her country was also applying for membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.

We also reported that, according to RFE/RL's Brussels correspondent Rikard Jozwiak, NATO will start considering applications from Sweden and Finland on May 18.
