Energoatom attracts a loan of GBP 181 million for purchase of nuclear fuel

The Energoatom national nuclear power generating company and a consortium of international banks, consisting of Deutsche Bank AG and Barclays Bank PLC, concluded a loan agreement in the amount of GBP 181 million on July 17.

This follows from a statement by the Ministry of Energy, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"The purpose of the loan is to ensure the fulfillment of the contract between Energoatom and Urenco on the purchase of nuclear fuel. In particular, the funds will be used to finance the supply of nuclear materials - enriched and natural uranium hexafluoride - under the specified contract. The agreements provide for the supply of nuclear materials until 2035 with the possibility of extension contract until 2043," the message says.

The loan is granted for five years under the guarantee of the government of Great Britain (through the export credit agency UKEF).

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in November 2023, Energoatom agreed with Urenco Group (Great Britain) on the supply of enriched uranium until 2035.

Urenco Group is engaged in the enrichment of uranium (by gas centrifuge technology) for its use as fuel at nuclear power plants.

The company owns uranium enrichment facilities in Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and the United States, it supplies fuel for nuclear power plants in 15 countries of the world, mainly to Europe and the United States.

Urenco Group's share is about 29% of the world market for uranium enrichment services.
