Russian army 70-90% dependent on components of Western production — FT

Russian army, Russian weapons, Russian military equipment

The military-industrial complex of the aggressor state of russia relies on 70-90% of Western-made components, despite the imposed sanctions.

It was reported by the Financial Times on Wednesday, July 24.

In its recent attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, russia has used new types of weapons, including the Kh-69 and Zircon missiles. This shows that the aggressor is able to introduce innovations in production, which requires even more complex Western components. Despite numerous sanctions, Western companies still bear a significant part of the responsibility for ensuring russia's access to these critical parts, the publication writes.

"In 2023, the Ukrainian authorities launched a unique resource that provided unique information about the Russian army. The authorities found 3,638 components in 134 separate weapons," the report said.

For example, the Shahed-238 UAV contains electronic components from countries such as Canada, China, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United States. These data confirm russia's own research that its army is 70-90% dependent on Western-made components, the FT notes. Russia is able to adapt, but it does so with the help of the West, the publication writes.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in June, russia began to massively buy old machine tools and other high-precision equipment in China, as it cannot buy them directly from Western manufacturers due to sanctions.

Numerous sanctions do not prevent the russian federation from importing several thousand components for its combat aircraft.

Recall that in March, The Wall Street Journal reported that russia doubled its import of substances for the production of explosives despite numerous restrictions.
