Corvette Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi, built for Ukraine's Navy, set afloat in Turkiye

In Istanbul (Turkiye) on August 1, the Ukrainian corvette Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi was set afloat, which became the second warship of this class built in Turkiye on the order of Ukraine.

This was reported by the press service of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Defense Minister Rustem Umierov on the Facebook social network, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"On August 1, in Istanbul (Turkiye), at the İstanbul Shipyard Naval shipyard, the launching ceremony of the second corvette-class multi-purpose ship, which is being built by the Turkish shipbuilding company STM on the order of the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was held. The godmother of the corvette, as in the case of the first Ada-type ship, Hetman Ivan Mazepa, became the first lady of Ukraine. She smashed a bottle of champagne against the hull of the ship built for Ukraine. It is believed that from this moment the corvette officially received its name - Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi," says the message of the Navy.

Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umierov, Commander of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Vice-Admiral Oleksii Neizhpapa, Verkhovna Rada member Mustafa Dzhemiliev and the management of the company that implements this project also took part in the launching ceremony of the warship.

In turn, Umierov added that the Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi and Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvettes, which were built in Turkiye due to russian aggression, are equipped with the most modern weapons and will become a significant addition to the Ukrainian fleet, increasing Ukraine's defense capabilities.

"Ukraine has already broken the dominance of the russian fleet at sea by destroying dozens of ships. We are actively expanding the capabilities of the Ukrainian Navy in the Black and Azov Seas. I am grateful to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for the initiative and support in the implementation of this important project," the minister noted.

He also expressed his gratitude to Turkish partners for their support during a difficult time for Ukraine.

Ships of this class are armed with a 76-mm Super Rapid gun mount, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, a RIM-116 anti-aircraft missile system, and torpedo tubes.

The aviation group of the corvette consists of the SH-60 Seahawk multi-purpose helicopter.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in March, during a working visit to Turkiye, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited shipyards in Istanbul where corvettes are being built for the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in accordance with the Strategy for the Development of the Navy of the Ukrainian Armed Forces until 2036.
