Russian gas transit termination will have minor effect on gas cost for domestic consumer - GTSOU ex-director Makohon

In case of termination of the transit of russian gas, the cost of gas for the domestic consumer will increase slightly.

The former director general of the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) Limited Liability Company Serhii Makohon said this in an interview with the Liga publication, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"Currently, gas transportation in the internal system costs approximately UAH 0.2 per cubic meter. According to my calculations, in the case of zero transit, this figure will increase to no more than UAH 0.6 per cubic meter. When we have a market price for gas of UAH 12/cubic meter (for commercial consumers), its increase by 40 kopecks, which is less than 3%, will not create problems for consumers. In the summer, the market price for electricity increased by 60% in my opinion. If the final price of gas increases by 5-10%, then, in my opinion, nothing terrible will happen,” he said.

At the same time, according to Makohon, it is necessary to optimize the Ukrainian GTS very quickly, so as not to transfer to the population the entire cost of supporting the excess capacity of the GTS.

"If transit is zero or minimal, we will need up to 10 stations. The maximum is 12 of the 74 that are currently supported. People work there regardless of whether the compressor station is working or not. In total, 11,000 people work at еру GTSOU. This is a very large number of staff," he said.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, russian media claim that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have taken control of the Sudzha gas measuring station in the Kursk Oblast, through which russian gas transits to the European Union.

In January-July 2024, compared to the same period last year, russia increased the supply of gas for transit through the Ukrainian gas transport system to the European Union and Moldova by 10.5% to 8.072 billion cubic meters.
