Situation with water pollution in Seimas and Desna improves. Rada explains details

Seimas, Desna, water pollution

The pollution of the Seimas and Desna rivers is a serious ecological disaster, but the situation began to improve gradually due to the natural dilution of pollution by other water streams.

Olena Kryvoruchkina, Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management, has announced this.

She reminded that the source of pollution is the discharge of contaminated water from a sugar factory in russia, which occurred on August 11. This pollution spread across the Seimas River and reached the Desna River, having already covered 191 km. This is a serious threat that can affect the water resources of Kyiv and the Kyiv Region.

"Although the pollution is organic, its main danger lies in the reduction of the level of dissolved oxygen in the water, which leads to the mass death of fish. This was especially noticeable in the initial stages, when the pollution spot was still concentrated. However, later, after the pollution moved from the Seimas River to the Desna and dilution with cleaner waters such as the Snov River, the effect gradually decreased," the report said.

The main natural factor in the fight against pollution is its dilution, but due to the absence of artificial reservoirs or water regulating facilities along this path, the impact on this process is limited.

The current situation with water pollution in the Desna River began to gradually improve due to the natural dilution of pollution by other water streams. The spot of pollution does not move as a whole mass, but is dispersed, which reduces its negative impact on water bodies. In places where the pollution has already passed, there is an increase in the level of dissolved oxygen, and the analysis of water samples indicates that the situation has stabilized.

"To control the quality of water, daily monitoring is carried out by various bodies, including the State Water Agency, the laboratories of the Ministry of Health and the Kyiv Water Canal. Coordination between these structures is also organized so that they promptly exchange research results.

This allows Kyiv Vodokanal to promptly respond to changes in the concentration of pollutants and adapt its treatment facilities to the current situation," Kryvoruchkina says.

A batch of activated carbon to be used for filtration should be delivered soon to reduce odor and improve water quality. This will allow not only to clean the water from pollution, but also to eliminate unpleasant odors, which may cause additional concern among the population.

We will remind, in case of danger due to water pollution, Kyiv residents will be warned about it within a day, but currently the situation is completely under control.
