Mobile communications operator Kyivstar (Kyiv) plans to increase the autonomous operation time to 6 hours for 30% of the network in the 2nd quarter of 2025.

The company's president Oleksandr Komarov announced this at the Global Outlook conference, Interfax Ukraine reports.

According to him, now 65% of the network can work offline for up to 4 hours.

"Undoubtedly, energy is the biggest challenge. Currently, approximately 65% of the network is stable for 4 hours and the rest is approximately 2 hours... And we are looking at how to reach in the second quarter (of 2025) 6 hours of backup (reserve) of 30% networks," he said.

According to Komarov, in 2023 Kyivstar tried to make 100% of the network autonomous within 4 hours, but unsuccessfully, in particular due to a number of errors.

"We had an attempt to bring the entire network to 4 hours (of autonomous operation) in 2023, but there were mistakes like, for example, buying lead batteries. They just can't stand in these modes of unregulated blackouts, when for 8 hours you don't have any power supply and it is available for 2 hours. In fact, their ability to work decreases in direct proportion to this instability. Now we are changing and want to reach in the near future a 4-hour backup,” he said.

According to him, currently about 2,500 generators are used on the Kyivstar network, and in the near future their number will increase by about a thousand.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, mobile operators note that it is extremely difficult to ensure 100% autonomy of mobile communications and the Internet for 10 hours during power outages.

Previously, mobile operators were obliged to ensure 10 hours of network operation during a power outage.
