NATO preparing plan to block russian fleet in Baltic Sea

NATO, Estonia, Finland, Russian fleet

The armed forces of Estonia and Finland are developing a plan to block the russian fleet in the Baltic Sea. The plan will be put into effect in the event of an "extreme situation".

The commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, Major General Andrus Merilo, said this in an interview with Helsingin Sanomat.

According to Merilo, Estonia and Finland intend to increase cooperation in the issue of joint maritime defense. This cooperation involves the development of concrete plans, the implementation of which will make it possible to reduce the actions of the russian fleet in the Baltic Sea to zero.

The general noted that such a plan is entirely feasible from a purely military point of view.

"We are ready to do this to protect ourselves," Merilo said.

He did not specify the details of how Estonia and Finland intend to deal with russian ships in the Baltic Sea if the need arises.

When asked by journalists under what circumstances Tallinn and Helsinki intend to block the Gulf of Finland, Merilo answered that everything will depend on the security situation.

Recall that in May 2024 it became known that Sweden, which recently became a member of NATO, increased its military presence on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea.
