"Offensive countermeasures": European Parliament calls for countermeasures against russian threat to Europe

The russian federation represents a real threat to European countries. Therefore, the number one task for the new composition of the European Parliament should be security, defense, and the military industry. Also, it is time for the West to start implementing offensive countermeasures against russia.

This was stated by the member of the European Parliament from Latvia, Rihards Kols, in a comment to Guildhall.

"The European security architecture has been undermined by the pacifism that has dominated the West for a long time. It was believed that even tyrants could be dealt with by engaging them in trade, because even they would benefit from it (...). And this led to the fact that during the financial crisis the defense sector suffered the most. In some European EU member states, the largest reductions affected the defense sector. There was also a transition from compulsory service to a professional army, etc. What we have now does not correspond to reality at all. Now everyone is changing their policy - from Germany to Latvia. Everyone understands that the threat is real, and it is here, it is nearby," the MEP said.

"At the same time, when a large part of Europe is under the threat of an aggressor, we are still trying to maneuver and think about how we will look in the world (...). For the new composition of the European Parliament, the number one task should be security, defense, and the military industry. All this should experience a renaissance. There is no other way, because only the USA has high-tech weapons systems in the quantity currently needed by the EU and NATO member states (...). Various hybrid attacks have been going on for several years now (russia on the EU - ed.). For example, blocking the GPS signal, which in some cases affected the operation of civil aviation. Airports in Estonia were recently closed because GPS signals were blocked. And I asked my colleagues in the EU, how will we cope with this? The German general replied: we are improving our defense capabilities. Then I asked: what signal do we send to the aggressor? Keep attacking us, and we're still going to improve our defenses? I believe that we should start implementing countermeasures of an offensive nature," Rihards Kols summed up.

Earlier, the head of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense of the Parliament of Finland, Jukka Kopra, said that the aggression of the russian federation is a problem of the entire West that needs to be solved. In his opinion, it is important to understand that it is not only about Ukraine, as the russian federation is waging a hybrid war against the entire West.

Member of the European Parliament, ex-Minister of Defense of Lithuania, Rasa Juknevičienė, also noted that the russian federation is waging war not only against Ukraine. The attack on Ukraine is only a tool in the war against the entire Western world. And the main goal is that democracy, as a principle of governance, as a principle of political order, as a principle of life, was defeated.

Anton Hofreiter, member of the Bundestag, head of the Committee on European Affairs, expressed the same position. He believes that the West should realize that russia attacked not only Ukraine, but also all Western democracies, and such an attack has two main goals, the first is to weaken aid to Ukraine, the second is to destroy NATO, destroy the European Union, and weaken democracies around the world.
