ISW names reasons for active advance of russians in Donetsk Region

Russian troops are actively advancing in the Donetsk Region due to the topography of the area and insufficient staffing of the Armed Forces brigades.

This is stated in the russian Offensive Campaign Assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) as of August 1, 2024, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

According to the report, the advance of russian troops in the direction of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk Region is facilitated by the lack of personnel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the terrain northwest of Avdiivka.

However, analysts predict a slowdown in the russian offensive, as their troops are "advancing into a line of large and more urbanized settlements."

Ukrainian military observer Kostiantyn Mashovets noted that the Defense Forces in the area of Pokrovsk have worse equipment and means of protection, which makes it difficult to slow the russian offensive.

According to him, delays in the provision of Western, especially American, military aid led to a lag in equipping new Ukrainian units and re-equipping those already participating in the battles.

The ISW report also notes that the russian army is using this weakness to gradually gain tactical advantages northwest of Avdiivka, where russian forces are trying to achieve a limited tactical encirclement of the Ukrainian Defense Forces east of the T0511 (О0544) Ocheretyne - Hrodivka - Myrnohrad road and on the left on the banks of the Vovcha River.

"Geolocated footage published on August 1 shows that Russian forces have advanced further within Vesele towards the T0511 road, placing the current furthest confirmed Russian advance about 3.5 kilometers from the outskirts of Hrodivka," the report says.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the evening of August 1, analysts of the Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState announced that the russian invaders allegedly captured the settlement of Vesele on the Pokrovsk axis.

The day before, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that battles of varying intensity are ongoing on the Pokrovsk axis. According to him, some positions change hands several times a day.

Meanwhile, the United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that his country is concerned about the advance of russian troops in Ukraine.
