The amount of damage to the environment in the Chernihiv and Sumy Regions due to the pollution of the Seim and Desna Rivers already amounts to over UAH 405 million.

This is stated in the notification of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

According to the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Svitlana Hrynchuk, the ingress of polluted water from a russian sugar factory into the Seim River has caused significant environmental damage, while currently the polluted water is moving to the border with the Kyiv Region.

"Of course, people have many questions and fears. Will the situation affect the water supply? What will the quality of water be and will there be water in Kyiv at all? I emphasize right away, the situation is under control. All state and local authorities, responsible services are working in an intensified mode to minimize the consequences. The pollution is already less concentrated than it was at the beginning in the Seim and at the water sampling points in the Chernihiv Region. It will reach the Kyiv Region in an even lower concentration," Hrynchuk said.

It is noted that according to the data of Kyivvodokanal and the estimates of scientists, the sewage treatment plants of the Kyiv Region will cope with this challenge.

"In addition, Kyivvodokanal has prepared 120 tons of pulverized activated carbon. In the event of a worsening of the situation, enhanced water purification technology will be used. Therefore, the quality of water in consumers' taps will not change," the message states.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, an action plan is being prepared in Kyiv in case of deterioration of water quality due to pollution of the Desna River.

On August 29, the State Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergency Situations decided to extend the ban on swimming and fishing in the Seim and Desna Rivers and instructed to localize and eliminate pollution on these rivers.
