Ukraine will strengthen the protection of substations key to the operation of nuclear power plants (NPPs).

This was announced by the Ministry of Energy, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

According to the report, within the framework of the 68th General Conference of the IAEA, Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko held a meeting with the EU delegation led by Deputy Director General of the Directorate General for Energy Massimo Garribba.

Halushchenko thanked the European Commission for its constant support to Ukraine in the field of strengthening nuclear and radiation security, which is of particular importance in the context of massive russian attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector.

According to the report, the parties discussed the threats posed by hostile attacks on power transmission system facilities, including substations that are critical to the operation of nuclear power plants.

At the same time, special attention was focused on measures and tools that will allow strengthening the protection of such objects.

"We count on the effectiveness of monitoring the situation by the IAEA mission, which has started work at the first of such substations. We must consolidate the world community as much as possible to prevent not only direct russian attacks on nuclear facilities, but also the infrastructure that ensures their stable operation," Halushchenko said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Ukraine agreed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to extend the agency's monitoring mission to key substations, on which the stable operation of nuclear power plants depends.

A massive attack by the russians on August 26 led to the shutdown of four nuclear units.
